Chances are that you know someone who raves about mind-body exercise and is nudging you to give it a try. Or maybe you’re the enthusiast who is looking for more. There’s good news. Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi moves found their way into gyms a couple of decades ago, and at Valley Health Wellness and Fitness Center mind-body fitness sessions are here to stay.
Mind-body group sessions at VHWFC cater to the varied needs of members – from individuals trying to manage pain and increase mobility – to those seeking an edge in athletic performance and everyone in between. Sessions are classified as “mind-body” if they focus on four elements from both a physical and a mental perspective.
VHWFC members can choose from 20 different mind-body classes offered each week at VHWFC. You can do the classes with or without shoes. This allows for head-to-toe freedom and an emphasis on building foundations and function from the ground up.
Tai Chi includes gentle, very slow flowing movements. VHWFC members have the unique option of doing Tai Chi on land or in the warm water of therapy Pool.
Yoga sessions at VHWFC are varied enough to meet anyone’s needs. The center provides props like mats, “yoga bricks” and “straps” to help participants individualize their poses. While all sessions include time for guided relaxation and attention to breathing, there are different yoga formats to suit various needs. Sit & Fit Yoga focuses on seated movements done in a chair. In contrast, Power Yoga, Yoga, Yin Yoga, Yoga Sculpt and Mindful Yoga include standing poses and movements done on a mat. For aqua enthusiasts, instructors offer Water Yoga. Yoga for Kids is offered periodically to our youngest members. Yoga classes are non-competitive environments. There are no ribbons handed out for being bendy! Come explore.
Meditation classes are offered the 2nd Saturday of each month at VHWFC. Meditation can help you gain the mental focus needed to win your next tennis match or help you deal with chronic pain. If you can sit, you can reap the stress-busting, focus building benefits of meditation!
Pilates involves careful attention to breathing as you execute movements to strengthen abdominals, legs, back, arms and more. Pilates sessions often incorporate toys like Pilates rings, balls and bands. Try the full hour of Pilates or pop-in for 30 minutes of Pop Pilates or a hybrid class like Fit Walk & Pilates to see what it’s all about. Instructors strive to help participants find proper alignment and posture, which can enhance the effectiveness of future workouts and daily life.
Barre Body is a spirited hybrid class that melds moves from Pilates, dance conditioning, flowing Yoga and traditional strength classes. Participants use a light-weight transportable barre called an Equalizer to enhance balance and develop cardiovascular and muscular strength.
Take off your shoes (or leave them on) – but try out a mind-body class. Let the team at VHWFC help you find your mind-body fit!
