Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women (not counting skin cancer). In men, prostate cancer is more common, while in women breast cancer is more common.
Usually symptoms of lung cancer do not appear until the disease is already in an advanced, non-curable stage. Therefore, prevention is the best medicine. If you are a current smoker, you should try to quit.
For most Americans who do not use tobacco, the most important modifiable risk factors for cancer are body weight, diet, physical activity, exposure to second-hand smoke, radon, asbestos, diesel exhaust, air pollution, and radiation therapy to the chest. Avoiding tobacco products, staying at a healthy weight, remaining active throughout life, and eating a healthy diet may greatly reduce a person’s lifetime risk of developing or dying from cancer. These same behaviors are also linked with a lower risk of developing heart disease and diabetes.
It is your health! Be proactive.
