August 15, 2014 is National Relaxation Day. Most of us cannot take the day off from work to celebrate, but there are some ways you can relax at work. Or, after work, you can take advantage of some other options.
First, do neck rolls. Begin by sitting up straight in a chair, gaze at the ceiling while keeping your neck long. Bring your left ear towards your left shoulder and hold for 10-30 seconds. Roll your head towards the ground bringing your chin to your chest and hold for 10-30 seconds. Finally, roll your head to the right bringing your right ear to your right shoulder and hold. Inhale and exhale through your nose in a slow, controlled manner throughout the exercise. Repeat the entire series two times.
Another exercise to relieve tension while working at a desk is the seated forward fold. Begin by sitting up straight in a chair with your legs slightly wider than hip width apart and your feet flat on the floor. Engage your abdominal muscles by drawing your belly button inward toward your spine. Keeping your arms relaxed by your sides, pull your shoulder blades together and push them downward. Take in a deep breath. As you exhale, release and round the back, slowly lowering your chest to in between your legs, placing your hands flat on the floor. Allow your shoulders to relax and round. Stay in this position for five breaths. As you inhale, slowly roll up, allowing your head to be the last part of your body to lift. Relax the shoulders back and down.
After work hours, schedule a relaxing massage. With many different types of massages available, there is something for everyone. While you are experiencing the physical benefits of the therapy, allow your mind to relax also. It will be a great time to calm your thoughts and increase your results.
Or consider taking a yoga class. Yoga can improve your balance and provide a time to unwind from your hectic day-to-day activities.
However you choose to celebrate tomorrow, just remember that the focus is on RELAXATION! Take as much time as you can to unwind, breath deeply, and do something that helps you de-stress.
