Did you know that swimming has physical and psychological benefits? It’s an activity to be enjoyed by people of all ages, abilities, and physical conditions. This great form of exercise can burn calories and help individuals maintain healthy weight. Since your body has to work against the resistance of the water, swimming for 30 minutes at a steady pace can burn over 200 calories and result in the same benefits as 45 minutes of some land-based exercises. In addition, swimming provides a great full-body workout to improve muscle tone and increase cardiovascular fitness without the harmful results of higher-impact activities. The water reduces the impact on your joints which makes it ideal for even those suffering from arthritis or other bone and joint conditions.
While the psychological benefits of swimming are less documented, some studies indicate that regular swimming can lead to decreased stress and depression and increased energy. It can help people to relax both mentally and physically, providing a brief respite from the cares of the day.
If you have never incorporated swimming into your regular exercise routine, why not consider it? It can be a nice change of pace and task the systems of your body in a different way. This can be just what you need to stimulate your body to keep achieving your desired health and fitness goals.
Now would be a great time to adopt a swimming habit. We’re running an 8-week swimming challenge from July 7 to August 29 to motivate and reward you. There’s still time to sign up for this FREE Summer Aquatics program. It’s a fun way for you to challenge yourself this summer, whether you are an avid swimmer or want to try something new.
