January is Family Fit Lifestyle Month, the perfect opportunity for you and your family to make some positive changes for 2016. Here are five ways to get started.
1. Focus on the Positives
Healthy changes are easier to stick with when they’re done for the right reasons. While most fitness advice relates to minimizing the risk of obesity and disease, your family should also focus on the things you’ll enjoy by becoming more active and eating healthier foods—higher energy, better moods and a strong body.
2. Actions, Not Outcomes
Specific outcomes are not under our direct control, but day-to-day actions are. Break down your family’s long term goals into specific, measurable actions (exercising together at least 30 minutes a day, cooking a healthy family meal 3 nights a week, or replacing soft drinks with water). Focus on these actionable goals and the long term outcomes will take care of themselves.
3. Make it Fun
Fitness shouldn’t feel like a chore. Instead of grinding through boring workouts that you don’t enjoy, find engaging outdoor activities or physically active indoor games. The more fun you have, the greater the chance that your lifestyle changes will stick.
4. Take Baby Steps
Big changes can be overwhelming when we expect them to happen overnight. Rather than attempt to change your entire lifestyle in one massive step, make incremental improvements by committing to one manageable, positive change at a time.
5. Be the Role Model
A healthier family starts with healthier parents. The best way to inspire your kids to become more active and make better eating choices is to step up first and lead by example.
