The first official day of summer 2015 was June 21. Maybe you are planning to spend some quality time in your garden or you’re looking forward to that annual family vacation to the beach. Whatever is on your calendar this summer, it’s almost certain there is some type of outdoor activity included. If not, now is the time to explore your options for some fun in the great outdoors!
Governors across the country join the President in proclaiming June as Great Outdoors Month. The proclamation which began in 2008 reached participation by all 50 states in 2014. Great Outdoors Month is a celebration of the country’s legacy of environmental stewardship and a resolve to preserve clean and healthy outdoor spaces for the future. Events sponsored by different organizations occur throughout the month.
You may have heard the saying “Virginia is for Lovers.” A website of things to do in the state of Virginia has a page dedicated to Great Outdoors Month that includes 25 outdoor adventures. These activities range from hiking to a waterfall, exploring the beach, biking a rail trail, and going camping. Check out the Virginia is for Lovers website (www.virginia.org/gom/) if you’re interested in learning more about these outdoor activities in our home state.
While the activities listed on the Virginia is for Lovers website provide a great variety and adventure experience across the state, some of you may choose to stay closer to home. The Winchester/Frederick County Visitor’s Guide provides an excellent list of outdoor opportunities right here in our area (www.visitwinchesterva.com/attractions/outdoor-recreation-1). For a scenic adventure head out to the trails at the Third Battlefield site or pick up the Appalachian Trail. The surrounding area also offers camping opportunities, geocaching, and cycling groups. Consider making your way downtown to the outdoor mall for a walk, dinner, and some live music. Last, but certainly not least, try out one of the walk/run routes at the Valley Health Wellness and Fitness Center provided to us courtesy of Runner’s Retreat.
Whatever your age, ability, or preference, you’re guaranteed to find some type of outdoor activity that works for you. Browse through some of these options and try something new this summer.
