September 21-27 is National Rehabilitation Week, so be sure to thank a rehabilitation professional during this celebration week! Chances are at some point in your life you will need or you have already used the service of rehabilitation professional. The National Rehabilitation Awareness Foundation was established in 1996 by Allied Services to educate the public on the importance of rehabilitation. According to their website, “the mission of the National Rehabilitation Awareness Foundation (NRAF) is to educate people about the benefits and impact of rehabilitation, develop programs which aim to increase opportunities for the nearly fifty million Americans with disabilities, and help those who are disabled live up to their fullest potential.”
Rehabilitation can include services from but not limited to physical, occupational, recreational, and speech therapists, nurses, exercise professionals, counselors, and physicians. The goal of these services may be to restore function, improve health, recover from surgery, or simply help someone lead a productive, independent life. Rehabilitation may last weeks to years in a formal setting but is something that never really ends. Those living with a disability or chronic condition must adhere to a physically active lifestyle to promote long term health and maintain a high level of independence and functional ability.
